Ok, it sounds like Omega 3 is da bomb. But what is the correct amount to give to our kids?

Depends on the age of the child and the condition or diagnosis you are trying to improve. This is necessary to know because a younger child will require more DHA than EPA. A bipolar child will require a higher dose of both.
It is also important to take vitamin E and C with this. The amino acid L Carnitine helps transport the fatty acids so this should be included in my opinion.
I could give you some basic information but would rather be more specific to your needs.

Definitely da bomb The use of Omega-3 is backed by a growing body of good scientific evidence. Much of it -- except for the really new stuff -- is outlined in Jacqueline Stordy's book "The LCP Solution", if you're interested in reading about it. My personal experience is that Omega-3 works. It takes a while to begin showing results. For my son, we began seeing real results at about the 6 week mark, but a deficiency can take as long as 12 weeks to correct, so it might not be 6 weeks for you (or it could be faster!) A GENERAL guideline, based on the recommendation of experts like Stordy, as well as newer research, is that you need to provide at least 480mg of DHA and an even higher quantity of EPA. We use 720mg EPA. However, OhMama is right, this varies according to a child's needs. If you post more specific information, she won't steer you wrong. She's very well-informed on the subject!

Ok, my 7-year old son is certainly on the skinny side. He's been diagnosed with ADHD/inattentive type. Seems his troubles only come out in school, when he's asked to concentrate, especially in reading and writing. Dexedrine works on the attentiveness, but gives him blinking tics. It also drives him to organize things, and makes him very emotional as he comes down. I know he's eager to get off meds, because he asked me if he could try school without them. Hope this info helps. I already bought Nordic Natural DHA. They come 250 mg, and are kid-friendly strawberry flavored. The questions are: how much a day, and does EPA also come in kid friendly form, and in what dosage? You already gave me the formula for magnesium. Anything else?

Newshound, Does that name mean you like to do research? I hope so because I have a suggestion for you. There's a book called Straight Talk about Psychiatric Medications for Kids by Dr.Timothy Wilens that is so wonderful it takes my breath away!! The revised edition just came out and I ordered it from Amazon. You will be able to get this at your library, probably not the revised edition yet though. In this book you will find tons of information on the stimulant medications, tics, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. and the meds used to treat them. I was amazed that there were so many choices when you are working with multiple disorders like tics and adhd combined. I'm suggesting this because you may want to consider what your options are with the different meds that can address the tic issue you are dealing with. From what I've read there are other meds that work very well for this. A med change could be just the thing he needs? If he wants to be off the Dexadrine it could be that he knows it's not working the best for him. On the omega 3 fatty acids.... You have an excellent product with Nordic Naturals DHA. That is the one I would have picked too for your childs age and diagnosis. This product contains 250mg of DHA as well as 75mg of EPA per softgel. You would only need to give two of these a day (with food). The amount of vitamin E is very small and I would suggest giving 100 IU of mixed tocopherois with this and add a vitamin C of 500mg. Another book to check out is the one recommended by Catatonic, The LCP Solution by Dr. Stordy and Malcom Nicholl. This will give you the basic information on what these fatty acids do. Both DHA and EPA are long chain omega 3 fatty acids that are combined in your formula so you don't look for them separately. I'm glad to see you're up on the magnesium! Let us know how it works. I may not be around for a while (will find out tomorrow) but you are in good hands with Catatonic. If you want to chat with me I can be found at the other forum millermom.proboards23.com

Actually on the Nordic Naturals, it takes 4 softgels to get to 250 mg... according to the label. So does that mean you are recommending to take 4 of them to get 250mg, or to take 8 of them to get 500 mg?

Newshound, I had to laugh, this oil is being called the ohmama 3's. I'm sure what everyone means is the omega 3's. Could you please read the lable of your product and let me know if it really is called Nordic Naturals DHA? It sounds like something else when you are talking about the amount in each softgel. On the website www.nordicnaturals.com the product called Nordic Naturals DHA has 500mg DHA and 150mg EPA, etc. in two softgels. There's something very screwy about this. I can't modify the word ohmama to read omega. What's that all about

Having you seen Rosyred's new footer? That has given me an idea.
Yes, you have to watch catseye. She's been known to have blond hair in the summer and a few pranks up her sleeves.
