I know alot of people here on the feingold diet and was wondering...Is there anything to replace KETCHUP? My husband terrible allergic to so many things and KETCHUP is TERRIBLE for him!! It must be the red dyes or whatever? It's terrible to eat hamburgers/meatloaf or whatever without Ketchup or bar-b-que sauce!! Suggestions would be WONDERFUL!
thanks....Madison

Madison, you can go two ways with this...use something instead of catsup (homemade Ranch dressing here) or make your own catsup so that it is dye-free, chemical-free, etc. Catsup -- ALL commercial catsup -- is loaded with corn syrup so we avoid it like the plague. Homemade isn't hard, either. It just starts with canned tomato sauce (the kind that is ONLY tomatoes). If you can't find tomato sauce that looks "clean" try tomato puree or tomato paste. (You'll have to thin out the tomato paste.)
Take a can of tomato sauce (15 oz) and dump it in a sauce pan on the stove. Warm it up and add 2 Tbsp vinegar and enough brown sugar that it tastes good (about 1/2 cup) and a dash of mustard powder and thin it with a little water if necessary. The kids like this just fine.
Does your husband get allergic reactions to tomato in general, or just to the catsup? How about canned spaghetti sauce?

this might sound wierd, but a few weeks ago, I made chicken nuggets. Tomatoes drive Mikey up a wall, so I don't let him have Ketchup alot.
Any how, we went through the fridge, adn anything that looked like a dip qualified: mustard, horse radish, salad dressings, mayo...etc. I put a dhish of each on the table and let the kids go to town with whatever was on the table. We called it a tasting party, and if they didn't like it on there, they just rinsed it off and tried something else.
If I remember correctly, your husband has severe allergies to alot, so maybe with whatever he can have, you could try the same thing.

That's a good idea. I may try it. We're having "tomato hangover" here this morning. I don't remember the last time my son had a fit, but he did today, after homemade pizza last night. I didn't have any pesto so used tomato sauce and hello Spaz Boy. It wasn't the horrible kind of fit where you wish you had an animal tranquilizing gun to shoot him in the b*tt...just a couple of shrieks, a few tears, and he got himself back under control. No hitting, throwing, kicking, head-banging, thank goodness. I've been reminding myself of how quickly he got a handle on himself so that I don't just focus on the fact that he pitched a fit, but I get the feeling I need to be pretty blasted strict about those tomatoes!!!

Did my son visit you, I could swear you discribed mine to a TEE. The shame of it is that Mikey LOVES Tomatoes and tomato products, so we just do it every couple of months, let him get it out of his system, then recover.

I hoped you would respond because your like ME have to find other products than the normal USUAL that everyone in the world can eat but my family (o: I use to make catcup a LONG time ago but QUIT because it was MAJOR....my mother in law receipt and I hated to THINK I would end up making that stuff again. Yours is SOOOOO EASY!!!!!! THANK YOU AGAIN!!! He CAN'T eat spaghetti sauce in a jar AT ALL!! No Ragu type stuff!! What's ever in those jars breaks him out terrible!!! It makes a person think sometimes it MIGHT be just the plain tomatoes? I'm going to make up this receipt and well see from there. There's so many spices I think sets him off too so have to be CAREFUL like I'm not sure about Garlic POWDER? I look and read and try to figure out what he can and can't eat? Oh Madison. I'm sorry. I hate to see that for your husband.
But it almost looks like your going to have to start from scratch, like a new born. Figure out exactly what he can have, then figure from there. Do a food or ingredient a week type thing.
I know it sounds hard, but it's worth it. Let us know Kaiti

Thanks Rosered, YES...It's a real struggle finding out what he can have and what he CAN'T. There's so many things like Mayo (must be the oil?) and the list goes ON and ON! Butter/margrene sp? Oh....I hate to think about it. Pkg foods and ANY out to eat fast food or alot of buffet stuff he can't eat. It's the stuff they flavor it with. He can't eat ANY HAM at all no matter how good the company. Something is in ham that breaks him out all over. Store bought pies...terrible! I just thank everyone that responded!! It's so nice to be able to throw out a question and someone is always good about replying Cat...I made the ketchup today. It said 'Tomato puree" He said "It tasted good." I'll know in about a hour if he starts breaking out. take care all!! Madison

Hey, Madison, get one of those spiral bound notebooks like the kids take to school and start keeping a food diary. You'd be surprised how much easier it is to spot patterns once it's written down. And once you have a list of problem foods, you can look at ingredients in case it's something added and not the food item itself that does it. It doesn't take long at all, maybe two minutes a day. Use the bottom half of the page to write down information about reactions or non-reactions. Stuff like if he has a rash, or a sinus headache, or is crabby, or is energetic, in a good mood, etc. You might find out things you'd never suspect otherwise.

Thanks Cat! That's a good idea. Well, something broke him out? I'm not sure if it was my ketchup or french fries? The puree tomatoes wasn't PLAIN TOMATOES and I didn't see that until after the fact. Looks like plain tomatoes to me? I'll start that diary!
thanks again....madison

Keep us posted. and make sure you list how you made things, like you said about the mayo, it might be the oil, so if he had french fries that were either in a deep fryer or sprayed with something while baking in the oven, list that too. I'll send you over an extra note book if you need one Kaiti
