Since there have been several recent posts about lecithin, which is important to production of the neurotransmitter choline, I thought I would post some information from a recent article in the newest issue of "Journal of Neurophysiology". Researchers fed choline to pregnant rats to determine what impact this would have on the fetal brains. Wow! Choline supplemented animals are "smarter" and have "greater learning capacity". The study abstract is here: jn.physiology.org/cgi/content/abstract/91/4/1545An article summarizing the study's findings (which is MUCH more readable) is here: www.naturalproductsinsider.com/hotnews/43h15161849.htmlHere's an exerpt from the article. If you're pregnant, take choline! "Women who take dietary choline supplements while pregnant may benefit their infants’ brains, according to Duke University researchers. Together with existing data on choline and brain health, the findings suggest the addition of choline to the diets of pregnant women could affect their children’s life long learning and memory. “Previous studies at Duke have shown that choline-supplemented animals are smarter and have a greater learning capacity, but we hadn’t known until now whether the cells that make up memory-relevant brain circuits are changed by choline,” said Qiang Li, M.D., one of the study’s authors. “Choline didn’t just change the general environment of the brain, it changed the fundamental building blocks of brain circuits--the cells themselves.”
