I got talking with a colleague at work today who was telling me how she HAS to have the towels in her linen cupboard all stacked up neatly and in a certain way .. All the emblems MUST be in a row .... colours must be together ... etc.etc. She said she is absolutely RIGID on this. The other thing she said was that when she hangs out her washing she MUST hang all the whites together ... all the blues together ... etc.etc. If anyone else hangs out her washing she goes and changes it all! ... Apart from these examples she has no other "obsessions" or "compulsions" but these are very real to her.
This lead me in turn to tell her that when I hang out my washing I ALWAYS have to use white pegs for whites, yellow pegs for yellow etc. ... a similar scenario to her washing ... and I HAVE to do this too ! ... I too will go and change a peg if I spot it is the wrong colour! ...
I found the discussion interesting and it made me wonder whether a LOT of people have things like this which are very "rigid" and in reality compulsive?
Does anybody else have any examples?

Not so bothered about my underwear drawer though ... have to confess it is all kind of "thrown in" !! ... ;D
Just thought of another ... Bathroom cupboard ... MUST have larger items stacked BEHIND smaller ones ... if a small bottle etc. gets mixed up with the big ones I get mad! ... Oh! and shower gels must be kept together... soaps together in a neat pile .... toothpastes together etc.etc. Heaven help anybody who disturbs my "order" of these things !!

Add me to the clutter bunch..... I am an absolute NEAT FREAK! I have been accused by dh once or twice (or more ) of being "obsessed" with keeping everything clean and orderly. Yes, EVERYTHING has it's place and anything not in it's place will drive me nuts until I get it there. I must sweep my kitchen floor three to four times a day when home... I can't stand to see any dirt on it. If laying on my couch and I spot a speck of something on the carpet, it drives me insane until I get up and get it. Now, imagine being this way and living with an ADHD'r that I affectionetly refer to as our "resident slob". ;D I also have this obsession with making sure my money/bills are lied up right. They all have to be facing the same direction and all right side up when in my wallet and grouped together by size. All twenties, then ten's, then one's etc.

Oh come one, you mean I am the only one organizationally challenged? I know I ain't, whyen things are out, although I have been better about the things that are laying around. If I have things that are put away, they BETTER be neat! I didn't wash them up for a reason just to have them get wrinkled or smushed into drawers. If it is put away, it is neat, if not, forget it, you'll be lucky to find it because of the 3 slobs that I am adding to the list. I have to have my towels all the same way. Color doesn't matter so as much as age or feel. I can't stand the nice fluffy towels to be on top of the ones that are ready to head for the rag bag. Silver ware? I thought it was a gimme to have everything in matching piles faceing opposite ways if one pile got too high, and they have to be even. And if I hear them fall, I have to go in a straighten them up. My neighbor on the other hand just dumps hers into the drawer Her husband used to laugh and say he knew I stopped over if hte silverware drawer was straightned. What about toilet paper? It NEEDS to be coming fromt he top. (I have been know to switch the toilet paper at other peoples houses, shhhhhhhhhh )

I am the exact same. Toilet paper AND paper towels HAVE to come from the top!!!!! My dh is bad about doing it the other way and I hae always got to change it! Another thing I'm bad at is hair twirling. That is something I catch myself doing alot, esp. when bored. I'll grab a strand of hair and just twirl and twirl!

Money has to be in order with all of the corners straight, no wrinkles. Toilet paper must be over the top! Food stuffs are stacked neatly with like items together and labels facing front. Everything in my refrigerator has a place. The tea pitcher, the butter, ketchup, etc. It all has it's own spot. I have a basket on the corner of my desk at home and upon arriving, keys, wallet, pocketknife, pen, lucky coin and work ID go in it. I have never lost any of them and never have to look for them either. My clothes all hang in order from largest to smallest (Coats, jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, long sleeve shirts, short sleeve shirts, tee shirts, pants, jeans) Everything must be at 90 or angles on my desk. Again everything has a place. I can walk into a room and see a picture on the wall askew and I will straighten it. It doesn't matter whose house, I have to do it. So pretty much everything in my house has a place. I can walk through my house in pitch dark and get dressed, eat and be out the door to work and I will have everything, and know where it all is. Or at least I could until I married my ADHD wife and had my ADHD daughter. ...and they have the nerve to say I am anal!

I'm going to approach this from another angle at the risk of being shunned by you neat freaks. My mother was a compulsive collector of almost everything. If there was a sale somewhere she would shop even if she didnt need it. She was ALWAYS the top shopper at yard sales and auctions. She had two houses , barns, outbuildings, attics, basements and they were all stuffed to the gills with everything imaginable. She had little passageways and I'd get so frustrated walking through her house cause things would fall around me as I'd walk through. But she got very agitated if somebody 'messed with her mess'. She passed away last year and it took us 7 children and our families about 9 months of daily work to make heads or tails of her estate. Imagine how hard it is for us kids to try to keep an orderly house (especially after inheriting her fine collection of junk) So I say to you neat nicks "I hate you , I hate you, I hate you! Just kidding- (really, just very jealous) Where are all you ADHDers with your infamous PILES? Come out of the closet!

Ah ha !! ... So looking at the last two postings by Dad2Brooke and Songwriter ... the question begs just what IS a compulsion or an obsession? Is it Ralph with everything well-ordered and organised and everything "in its place" or is it Songwriter's Mother who was buying everything she could and then finding she had nowhere to put it... ?
Hmmmm ... ?
