Holly,
You made me laugh - that is exactly what I meant when I felt like I could hear the nothing.

JEEZ, are you writing for me or my son?
We both do the same thing. I can't stand florecent lights, bug lights, over head wires. It juts drives me batty. Even the fan running in my tower is annoying right now.
BUT I've heard of music therapy, actually figured out in high school, that when I would listen to any heavy music, ie Metallica, Megadeath, Ozzy and then Early Rap like Run DMC or Beasty Boys, I would get my work done likety split.
Something about the rythms and how you mind works to send the messages . I don't know tech stuff about it, I just know it works.
Have a good one Kaiti

I had crazy hearing when I was younger. Crazy vision too. In my declining years some of the oddball things I could hear that others don't aren't so bothersome. Probably all those loud concerts I attended.
I can still see refresh rates on traditional monitor screens no matter how fast they're set. LCD screens were my sanity savers. I hear outdoor electrical wires hum. And of course flourescent lights. What a relief they're usually underground now! I used to walk home from school through the woods to avoid the wires overhead on the streets. College dorm life nearly drove me nuts.
I think at least half of my Walmart-itis is just plain sensory overload. It's bad in all stores but Walmart nearly kills me.
What a thrill. Christmas shopping season is upon us. If I start posting crazy things about how the elves are out to get me you'll know why.

This is kinda switching subjects in the middle, but on a related note--my son has a very acute sense of smell. He smells stuff long before we do, and thinks that some things that I consider fairly neutral smells, really stink. Also hates stale air--often needs to crack the window when riding in the car. Anyone else notice this?

Metallica, Megadeath, Ozzy and then Early Rap like Run DMC or Beasty Boys Kaiti, I like your taste in music. Rock on! ;D My daughter's middle name is Lynn. So her name is Brooke Lynn. My wife and I have a special affinity for the Beasty Boys hit "No sleep 'til Brooklyn", we just changed the lyrics to "No sleep since Brooke Lynn" ;D ;D ;D

I can also hear those high pitched squeals as well. I have always thought I may be ADD but a mild case as I got through school and college fine. My grades could have been better, but since I passed school easy, I never paid much attention to it untill I started reasearch for my sons ADD. I remember going into a store once when I was about 15, and the squeal noise (I think from an air conditioner) was soooo bad that I almost droped to my knees. I had to go outside and wait untill my mom was done shopping so we could leave. I even felt sick to my stomach. I also hear car brakes squeal when no one else can. Loud tvs and radios also bother me. By any chance can you hear dog whistles? I have heard a few depending on the pitch.

I haven't heard dog whistles, but if my husband and I are driving and there is either a knock , squeek, sound, something, I can hear it, even if the radio is on and the kids are jabbering non-stop,
Weird huh? Kaiti

I love to whistle. Usually, the minute I start whistling, Brooke asks me to stop. I wonder....

HI holly i too have to have a fan going on so i can sleep at night and i cant stand the ringing, doctor said it was tantinitus but i have never listened to loud music nor have i been around loud continous noise. for me everything comes in at the same lvl and sometimes its hard to make sense of it. when there is no noise i can hear the ringing, at times its seems so loud that i couldnt hear anything else, until i do hear something and it comes in loud and clear. i hear the clocks in my house ticking, i can hear wild life outside and cars comming down the road from a long way, and sometimes it drives me crazy. i have been meaning to ask my doctor about this, if i remember i will. Wow!! This sounds just like gabriel too.
He is supersensitive to sound, even sounds that other people would not deem bothersome. The same goes for smells. He can smell anything before anyone else can.

Oh yeah, my husband was teasing the other day. He told a guy, really low and barely audible that he wished he had my hearing during hunting season. I told him his hearing had nothing to do with it. Told him he had to sit in the deer stand quiet enough. And what's he say:
SEE I TOLD YA SO ;D
