Now, Anne, I have to ask....what's a "prawn"? LOL ;D I think you call them shrimps?? .... ;D ;D But in my opinion a shrimp is much smaller than a prawn so maybe there is another name for them ?? BIG SHRIMP ?? ;D ;D

I'm guessing that prawn is a shell fish . Am I correct in that...probably not. There are a few people I know that react the same way to shell fish as the way her poor boy did to the medication. Everyone reacts to everthing differently. It all is made up in the composition of your own or his own/her own body. I can take 3 day old steak, where as my husband has a problem if it is a day old. Let us know the updates

We had an psyc appointment on Friday and Nate's Dr. asked me to find out if Focalin XR was covered under our insurance. She said that it would be great to only have him take one pill a day. He seems to rollercoaster throught the day on his short acting meds. Would be nice. Maybe it would counteract the weight gain sideaffect from the risperdal he is taking. I always tend to be a bit conservative when it comes to changing something that is working. Not the best, but it is a huge improvment from this past summer. I think that if we can just introduce him to some coping mechanisms for when he panics, we will be making some real progress. Am I getting a bit off topic? Back to the XR. I wonder with Pinks son's reaction if it wasn't some interaction with the previous med. Wonder if Methadate is one of those you should ween off of. I don't have a clue what happened. I remember the scary time he broke out in hives after taking his second dose of risperdal. After that, he has not had a reaction. Dr's just said hmmmm, and wrote it down. Nate is getting to the age now where he can begin to make decisions on his medicines (although with some explainations). I have not been able to find a price for the medicine (xr) any clue? His regular focalin is about $1 per pill. Miles

Sorry, didn't mean to cause us to get off topic! ;D Christy heh heh .... I was guilty too ... and am not ashamed AT ALL !! Oh but back a little more on topic ... ;D Miles I wish I could help a little more on the price of the meds ... but being in the UK I haven't a clue !! but I do agree with getting Nate's input as much as you possibly can .... as you say he is at an age where he can now tell you to an extent how he feels on one vs another ... GOOD LUCK!!

Just wanted to let you all know that DD (14) will be starting Focalin XR 10 mgs. on Thursday. She has been on Ritalin LA 20 mgs. for quite a while, and has been reporting that she feels it isn't working very well for her anymore at school. Her doc says she has been reading some very convincing studies about the superiority of Focalin to Ritalin. We went the XR route because we have never used a short acting med and it would be hard for DD to deal with visits to the school nurse at the high school level. At its best Ritalin LA lasted about 7 hours, which doesn't really take her through the full school day given what time she has to board the bus, so if we can get 8 or 9 hours out of the Focalin XR, it would be great. I'll report back on our results.

Well, of course the pharmacy didn't have it and won't get it till next week....but they said mine was the second prescription that day, so I guess they'll be carrying it now.

Hi-
Just wanted to give an update on Nate(my younger son who had the ill reaction to the medication). The doctor put him on the med his older brother is taking, methlyn er 20 mg for Nate and 40 for Nick. No bad side effects at this time, still not lasting quite long enough but one thing at a time. Nate still is a bit scared about what happened to him. More than anything he is afraid it will happen again, but I am glad that the worst is over. Having two boys with adhd we have had our fair share of medicine changes and reactions but nothing even comes close to what happened with him. Still believe that in the future we will take the wait and see approach on new meds and wait till they aren't quite so new.

My 8-yr old son tried Focalin XR. Like all his other drugs, it worked for a short while. Then when we reduced the dose over the weekend, so he could feel hungry, and tried upping it again, the drug's effectiveness was gone. We did not find it much different than Ritalin LA.
