Bear in mind that right now your son is not at school ... and chances are - and it sounds hopeful - that he doesn't need the meds during the holidays as many kids don't ... (my son Sam didn't either)
However, I honestly think before you make up your mind on this you ALSO need to find out what the school says about your ds "on meds" or "off meds" .... the classroom environment and the need to "concentrate" is generally their most difficult obstacle ...
I guess what I mean is don't assume he will not need them at school just because he is doing well in holiday time ... both these situations need to be looked at independently !!
GOOD LUCK !!

thanks anne i totally agree, I just have to wait and see, I also do not want to just put him back on meds without giving it a chance. Hyperactivity has always been the main problem off meds and that seems to have lessened. I do not want to put him back on meds just because he is talkative, which so am I. I have to be able to differentiate what is "normal" and what is adhd, many kids who are not adhd do many of the things my son may do and they are not medicated. it is all so confusing, in some ways it would have been easier not to have taken him off concerta because i wouldn't have the decision to make, anyway thanks for listening and hopefully i will make the right choice!!!!

Pauul always took meds for school only. My family always told me he didn't act any different than any other kid. But he sure stood out at school when he had to focus....even with meds in school he really struggled to concentrate.

Cheermon, here´s for your succes Do you have anythingto say on school situation? I found listening music from the headphones help´s my ds to concentrate(sometime´s) also if he can swich from one subject to an other during the lesson´s, some stressball´s might help him to keep his mind in the matter....... I know there are lot´s of other way´s too, and natural way´s to treat adhd, whne you´re giving med-free a chnage these might be worth of thinking... Keep us posted

cheermom, welcome to our forum family!! my guess is that if your ds starts school without meds, he will be able to "feel" whether or not he is focusing properly. (i hope) i do understand, though, that you are worried how he will act socially. are your in-laws realistic about your ds and his original need for meds? lots of the parents here have said that relatives just dont get it and dont understand why kids need meds. my ds needs to be on meds yr-round, so sorry i dont have any experience with trying school without. good luck, keep us posted. we are here for you!

Cheer, That is what we notice with our son. Once the anxiety was treated, the ADD and the anxiety seperated, and we had a whole lot less of the ADD to deal with. Miles

Cheer, That is what we notice with our son. Once the anxiety was treated, the ADD and the anxiety seperated, and we had a whole lot less of the ADD to deal with. Miles I think Miles makes an excellent point here ! .... My son was diagnosed at age 13 with add and depression ... ok it wasn't anxiety ... BUT by the same token once we took care of the DEPRESSION the add was much less noticeable ... I agree completely with Miles' point here ... that the "anxiety" needs looking at ahead of the add ... you can THEN see what is left of the add and act on it... getting feedback from the school if possible at the same time .. GOOD LUCK!!

brittany is just adhd without anxiety or depression so i can't speak on that. but your son hasn't outgrown adhd and if he does, it probably won't be until after puberty. i've been told some dr's think it's possible to out grow it after puberty and other dr's think you have it forever, you just learn to cope better, as some of the others have said. i can say at 20, my daughter can now tell the difference between being on or off meds. she couldn't tell until the past couple of years tho. she thought she was fine either way. we were the ones who noticed the difference as well as teachers. i think how your son does in school without meds will also depend on his teacher. some deal with kids who are a little different in any way much better than others. we did try brittany on and off over the years without meds but didn't take long to get her back on them in order succeed in school and to have any kid willing to talk to her. while you hate to have your son on meds just for constant talking that also usually involves talking out of turn, interrupting, etc. which makes other kids not always want to stay friends with your child. as the others have said, you know your child better than anyone else. good luck karen
