Savvymom, Is Focalin a new medication, or just one I never heard of? I did a quick search, and it doesn't look like much has been reported about it yet. But one site did list loss of appetite as a side effect.
I'm anxious to inquire about anything that helps the same but doesn't affect appetite or sleep.
My son started on Adderall, and that was fine, though he was moody. We switched to Adderall XR with disaster--had a total rage that never happened again because we stopped it immediately. The switch to Concerta this year was so that he wouldn't have to take an extra dose in the middle of school. I noticed that he's more hyper than on the Adderall, but without the horrible moodiness.

Our son has been on Focalin for a year and a half. One of the main reasons he is on it is because of his sensitive stomach to all long lasting medications. He takes it after breakfast, it kicks in after about a half hour of school, then it wears off just before lunch, he eats, takes a second and sometimes a third dose after 4 hours. With the long lasting meds, he just would not eat at lunch and did not get hungry until just before bed. When he did not eat, the medicine on an empty stomach would make him vomit. The drawback to the stimulant is that he is on a rollercoaster of behavior and emotions. Our Dr. thinks that there will be a Focalin LA or XR coming out soon. We hope to have something that does not have a rollercoaster affect on him. Miles

20 questions a minute!! wow! that beats brittany i have to say! made me laugh to think how fast he must be talking! i went to pick up brittany's new ritalin prescription and it wasn't ready because they have to get it approved thru the insurance. i don't get it. she took ritalin for nearly 8 years and on and off since then and we've never had to have ritalin approved. it's the same insurance too. we did have to have the adderall approved and i understood that. sure hope they approve it soon since she's willing to try it again. karen

Ok, maybe I was exaggerating a little on the 20 questions a minute. I did count 14, it just seemed like 20. Miles

don't worry miles, i figured it wasn't really 20! but probably seemed more like 100 if he's anything like brittany! my brain truly hurts when i've spent alot of time with her! and does he ever talk about anything important, like his life, friends, school? brittany only talks about the movies, singers, who's dating who, who's in what movie coming up, etc, etc, etc...! so we get in the horrible habit of barely listening. then when she actually says one sentence of importance, we sometimes miss it! i try hard to listen so i don't miss it. i also don't want to be rude. i don't want her to think i don't listen to her so why bother to talk. we've tried to tell her that the things she talks about just aren't as important to us as they are to her. but we're always happy to listen to things that involve her and her life. but the info hasn't stuck! so i know way more about celebrity people, movies, etc than i ever wanted to know! i do sound more knowledeable about more current things going on in the celebrity world than most other parents my age do! karen

Karen, You know, now that I think about it, I can't remember one significant point he made during his 8 hours of talking. At times I wonder if he talks just so he can hear himself. Most people internalize their thoughts, he just puts them out there for the world to hear. Sometimes I say, wow, what a thought provoking idea!! Most of the time I cannot remember what he said. I attribute that to my million thoughts a minute absent mindedness. Miles

Today I was wishing my kiddo was on his meds for the first time in a month. He's all wound up cuz we're leaving for our annual trip to NY to visit grandma and grandpa. I had the ear protectors on ALL day. It ended with the wee one landing on his head off the couch. Now they're both in bed. Whew....
