:)went to Dr. Dd has grown 2 inches and gained 4 pounds since Dec! anyway Dr gave us a script for a small dose of short acting focalin so maybe we can get homework done in an easier and more timley fashion. 3 hours of homework on stuff I don't remember learning till Jr High is a bit much for an ADHD 5th grader.

what is focalin? i've never heard of it. dd used to take a 5 mg dose of ritalin at lunch and after school too. the after school dose also helped with after school activities. made a big difference in dd's ability to focus. karen

focalin is a fast acting stimulant that helps with concentration (at least in the case of my son). He would typically be ready to work about an hour and a half after taking it, sometimes sooner. It would wear off after 3-4 hours and for him, he would really crash and get whiney. So we started strattera to hopefully take the edge at lunch and the end of the day. We were "authorized" to give him a half dose of focalin after school, but then he was up half the night. So our homework sessions were pretty long. Miles

We got a script for focalin 2.5mg. When she was first diagnosed she was on focalin and it worked pretty well. Dr said not to give it to her after 6pm. We will see how it goes. 3 hours of math is not my idea of fun.

Focalin works so well for both of my daughters. I think you will be very pleased. For them, it kicks in after about 15-20 minutes and last 3-4 hours.
My fifth grader has about 1 1/2 hours+ of homework every night and on weekends! Focalin keeps her right on track and she gets it done beautifully. Her grades have been excellent this year, much better than when she was on concerta alone
I wish you luck! I've been there with those evenings that seem to never end (not to mention the crying and complaining--and you should hear my daughter, too) LOL!

I wish someone would give me a really good explanation why our kids have to spend hours on homework

I agree! I work as a teacher assistant at my 5th grade dd's elementary school. She has two different teachers to cover 7 subjects. One has a third grade son and the other doesn't have kids yet. I'd like to get their perspective on homework when they get to this stage of parenthood!
Every subject they cover each day has an assignment that goes with it. Because the day is cram-packed with work, the kids have to do all assignments not finished in class as homework. If the teacher spends 40 minutes of a 45 minute class teaching, the 5 minutes remaining is not enough time to do the worksheet, chapter problems, etc. Hence, homework in 4-6 subjects each night!
I'm sorry to go off. My dd is a good student, and a good worker. She works through all of her homework at one sitting--one subject after the other (thanks to focalin). It takes her 1 1/2 -2 hours most days to complete. I admire her for never complaining.
Let's not even go into how heavy her backpack is (and she is small- only 56 lbs. in 5th grade!) Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

If the kids don't finish work in class...sometimes they are kept in from recess....I don't like that. They need to run around and burn off that excess energy.

:)Rose is on Concerta 45mg. The teacher is going to LOVE me today. Somehow we thought there wasn't school today until we say the busses by the school. We drove home real fast, got her back pack and went to school. Guess what we forgot to take? Oh well most of the class will be rowdy coming off of spring break anyway. We will take the focalin this evening. I have a feeling that she won't getmuch done today so she'll probably have homework.
