My son is presently taking 10mg of ritilan 3x a day for over a year. it has worked great, school work great . social life good ,everything in it's place . however, lately i have noticed some behaviors i haven't seen in a long time. immuture goofy loud etc. It hasn't effected his school work and he is still getting highest marks on his behavior chart but in social situations he dosen't seem as in control as he was. i feel social stuff is so important that i don't want everything he has accomplised to go downhill. i F YOU WERE ME WOULD YOU RAISE HIS RITILAN A LITTLE BIT AND SEE IF HE CALMS DOWN OR WOULD YOU LEAVE IT ALONE SINCE IT SEEMS TO BE FINE AT SCHOOL?

hi crillmom, good to hear from you. i am very glad to hear how well your ds is doing in all other areas!!! that is great news! please remind me how old your ds is. the goofy social behavior may be normal nervousness for a boy his age. i guess you need to weigh how bad the behavior is and if it's interfering with his functioning. you could ask the dr if it's time to increase the meds. it's been a yr and he's grown, so it's possible a little bump up is needed. good luck and keep us posted.

hi amsmom thank you for replying so quickly, he is 10 years old and your right much of it could be typical 10 year old behaviors. he has grown and gained alot in the past year and a half so you never know, i think i will call his teacher tomorrow and see if she has noticed a difference, sometimes you need an unbiased opinion

Hi everyone i think we are going to bump up his meds slightly things are o.k. but they could be better . Like i said school is still ok but i see a decline in behavior . homework is taking way longer than usual and he said his mind was all over the place at school. Does anyone know why after a year and 1/2 dosing needs to be adjusted. Does growth and weight gain have anything to do with it? i will try bumping him up , if i am not happy with the results i can always go back down. thanks for listening

My theory on why they need to be upped from time to time, (totally uneducated, and NOT a dr theory!) is that their body adjusts to the dosage and it just doesnt do the trick any more... Sound technical enough? LOL
Go for it, like you said it can be put back down if need be... When sd was over medicated, we saw it very quickly... Good luck

They DO get used to it over time...but weight and growth are a factor too.

Yeah we have alot to look forward too,the teenagers I have seen lately are sooo silly and immature, thats when I look at my Son and say "hey he's not too bad"! I am sorta going through the same situation right now, with DS. if I don't give him Medication, or if given a low dosage,he is very goofy and silly acting, his peers give him bad looks and treat him differently, and not in a good way! If I DO give him medication the goofy, silliness goes away, but then he is really serious and irritable and hard to get along with, hurting him socially.Either way he is still inattentive. Thats great your Son is doing so well in school, especially socially, which helps with his self-esteem,and that really matters. What your doing sounds like a good idea ,his weight gain and growth probably does require him to have a higher dosage. Please let us know how it works out. Good luck!

wellI bumped him up last night to 15 mg. for wrestling and my husband said he did great. It was just like it had been before we started having issues again, I am hopeful this was the right decision. Today the Dr. suggested we give him 15 in morning 10 at the lunch time dose and 15 again after school for religious school and wrestling does that sound good. Do you think this sounds good i am thinking of trying metadade cd to elimanate all these pills. does anyone have any experience with this med? Is it as effective as reg.ritilan?

I dont know anything about metadate cd, but when I saw your sons dosing schedule I was going to suggest a longer acting medication... That seems like alot of pills~ and alot of disruption to a day to take a dose to me...
Sd is on adderall xr, which is a long acting one, personally I wouldnt want those extra doses... I like the one pill in morning and done regimend (and one in afternoon if necessary for a booster)... Still wishing you the best of luck! It is awful trying to find the right dosage for our kids, it took us over a year...

DS is on 20 mg of metadate CD and it is working really well for him. It does wear off by the time he gets home from school so we give him 10mg regular ritalin when he gets home for hockey and homework but it is nice for him not to have to go to the nurse's office every day. I like the delivery - it seems to work smoothly with DS. Also the rebounds aren't really an issue with the metadate CD for DS. They do make a 30mg capsule which would be equal to two 15 mg doses.

eaccae, what time do you give your son the metadate in the morning? Is it as effective as reg. ritilan, we did not like ritilan la so we are a little weary of the longer acting meds. How many hours do you think it lasts? My son has a party to go to fri. night that will be longer than 4 hours and i won't be around to give him another dose. do you think giving him medatade in the morning and then again after school would be too much?

My Son has taken meatadte, along with every other stimulant know to man! I found that the Metadate CD lasted 6 hours, the manufacturer says eight, but I have noticed it's usually less than what they say. My Son had sleep issues with it,as he did others stims,so I could not see giving him another Metadate CD later in the day. Iwould NOT recommend it! My Son takes Karate two nights a week,so we would use the short acting Ritalin for that, and it helped,he still had a hard time falling to sleep. Metadate CD IS Ritalin, just made diferently,to last longer. DS is now taking Concerta, but at a low dose,we just found out he has problems with stimulants, if they are not low doses. We don't have to give him the short acting ritalin now for Karate, because the Concerta lasts longer than the MetadateCD did. From what I can tell it lasts in his system, nine hours. It is given to him at 7:00 am. I do like the Concerta more than the Metadate, BUT he has had tics with the Concerta and not the metadate, which has been the ONLY drawback. We don't see the tics hardly at all now that the dose is lowered.Like they say every child is different and responds to meds different. I would try giving him the short acting ritalin right BEFORE he goes inside to this party, which will last three to four hours. Thats what I have done in situations like that for DS. Hope this helps SORRY SO LONG!
