I also would be very worried about a doc that uped meds that were working. My doc always said to use the lowest working dose of any stim. DS is a "mild" case of ADHD, and has always been on low doses, and they work great. These meds are controlled for a reason, and upping a dose just because it may stop working is hogwash! My DS was on adderall 20 mg for years before he needed an increase. And that was only this year at 14 1/2 years old. I think you are a great mom, and you are doing the right thing to wait for the psyc to look at your DS. My ++++prayers+++++ are with the both of you.

The ped's visit was pretty much a crock. Our doctor said that he doesn't believe that it was the meds that caused him any trouble, and was angry that I have decided to let the psych handle his meds from now on. Guess I insulted him somhow.
The good news is that the psych contacted me today, and we went in to have our needs assessment. Kelby is going to get outpatient therapy once per week until he gets his issues under control, and they also started him on Strattera, saying that it has some kind of mood elevating properties as well as helping with the adhd. I am hopeful, but they told me it could take upwards of four weeks before we see any results. Just as long as he doesn't get so depressed again, I would wait for a year!!! At least we are close to christmas break, so it wont be hard for him at school while adjusting to these new meds. I just hope they work out for my litte man, I can't stand the thought of him suffering from this sadness anymore!!

Bigmomma, know what, who the heck cares what you ped think at this point. OOPS sorry, talking before....no wait after thinking , not sorry. Go with the psych. Our regular doc told me Mikey was just being a boy a year ago, and now his teacher is saying that meds will solve the problem Big differnce in opinion for only being a year. Anyhow, le tus know how the psych is, sounds really promising. Oh and the counselor here at the school recommended a behavior counsellor- to help Mikey, so maybe looking into that to might help. Good Luck

Warning... I find many doctors expect unquestioning obedience from patients. They don't want anyone to know anything - they're the only "experts." I am in the pharma industry, so I know a *little* bit about meds (just enough to get me in trouble! ;D), and when I ask a doc a question and he is insulted, offended, or taken aback in any way (I had one say, "what are you, a nurse?" in a very derogatory tone), that's it, I'm outta there! So find another ped for your kids' general needs, and stick with the psych for the adhd. When I find a doc I like, I'll go to extremes to keep them. Example, my peds neurologist is now 1.5 hrs away and doesn't take my new insurance - we go anyway! Kris Best wishes to you!

ahhh! I just got the insurance company's information on the mental health prices. For the initial consultation I owe them 225.00, and for each outpatient therapy session they want 45.00! OMG! I have no where near that much money, get real! Guess easy soulutions are never so easy after all.

bigmomma, i know how hard it is to pay for the services. can you ask the mental health facility if they have any sliding scale opportunities? it doesnt hurt to ask. dont be embarrassed, that is a lot of money!!besides, they are going to get money from the insurance company too.

We are still exploring all the different counseling centers in our area, and praying for one of them to be willing to work with us a bit. Our insurance doesn't pay for counselors or social workers, so they have to see a psych, and then it only pays for 25% of the visit. Depending on how much per hour the psyc costs, it has varied from 200 to 60. Ugh. This is very stressful, and we have still got a few more places to try.
