My ten year old sons (65-70 ILB) medication seems needed to be switched or upped YET AGAIN! This is driving my Husband and I crazy! I am also having a hard time with his Doctor prescribing higher doses,I am beginning to wonder if he thinks were selling it! My Son is currently taking Adderall XR 15mg, which was increased from 10 mg, which we had started a week and a half before school which was Aug 5th, to 15mg on the 1st of September. Well I 've noticed a pattern,it seems like any medicine he takes, it works fine for about three weeks, four if we are lucky! He has been on Metadate ER, Metadate CD, and now Adderall XR ,my Son seems to do better on the adderall based medications. I have a fast metabolism, as does my Son, and I am wondering if this has to with it, or if he just keeps building up a tolerance to these meds,it is really scaring me because I am wondering if he will eventually get used to the highest dose possible! I used to have a very fast metabolism, I didn't gain weight for nothing (except when pregnant-son was 10 pds) Until I started Taking Remeron,(which I am off of now! I had no worries about weight or my metabolism.I swear I gained 35 pounds in less than a month on Remeron! This is coming from someone who could never gain weight! Well I read that Remeron will make you gain weight and affects your metabolism, actually slows it down. I actually like my weight now, I'm not too skinny anymore but I have to watch it more than I did ever since the Remeron and that was almost two years ago! I am just wondering if my Son's metabolism could be like mine. When I was a child, going to the dentist they would have to keep giving me injections of novacaine (s/p?) because it would wear off so fast, after being put to sleep as a teen, I had to be knocked out again during surgery because the anestesia wore off, not to mention my epidural wearing off too soon, I'll never forget that! Has anyone here had these experiences or have tried Remeron for their child? Or anyone here who keeps having to change their medication or their childs with in a month,or less to a higher dose or different med? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

OK. This is really weird, I looked over my post and I did NOT type in " My little male monster" it's in there twice .What the hell is going on? I would never type that! For one thing I know how to put spaces between words! This is crazy.

hi CJsmom, welcome to the forums. I'm afraid you got caught up in our anniversary contest and i'm sorry that it took you by surprise. we are always serious about our members concerns and are here to help, listen and provide support. we are approaching the one year anniversary of the site (oct 27) and have put on a little contest to see who can spot the errors in the posts.so far, members have been telling us it is fun and they are enjoying catching the errors. we have a thread on it in the non-adhd section where members get points for catching errors. i believe the site edit filter has been "fixed" to change the word "s o n" to little male monster. i'm sorry for the confusion and i hope we did not offend you.

cjsmom28, back to your original question. my ds did not do well on any stimulants such as adderall, but i have had to deal with med changes, waiting for them to work, trying a new med, waiting for that to work, on and on. i do know that many of the parents here have had success with adderall, but i think their kids are on higher doses than 15 mg. either that or they take 15 mg several times a day. we have a lot of great members here and i'm sure they will share their adderall experiences with you.
i dont have any experience with remeron, but i know it is used for sleep and i think sometimes for behavior, but im not 100% sure.

cjsmom, I'm sorry you had to taste the game like that. This is a wonderful forum with lots of knowledge.
Look around and as Amsmom has pointed, the non-adhd section and humor sections are HUGE tension breakers.
Take Care Kaiti

we recently changed the words "mom", "mama", "mother" to say "lady with a hat and broom." we confused some poor new members with that one. as a matter of fact, i was a little confused. i thought it was only supposed to change "mom", and i tried to get around it writing "mother", but the filter changed every word used for "mom"!!!!

Yeah Adderall has been working better with my Son than the Ritalin based meds, he seemed depressed and like a zombie on the Ritalin. I have seen much more people like the adderall also.Oh, I forgot to mention,he is also taking 5mg of lexapro in the morning with the adderall. Yes right now I do need some humor! I'll be checking out that section often! (so so stressed!) Thanks for the warm welcoming!

Welcome to the board cjsmom! And congratulations on your first point in our game! ;D ;D
My sd (see I can beat the game sd=step daughter) is 8 years old and is on adderall xr 30 mg... She weighs about 45 lbs... For a time she was on remeron, and it just didnt help her appetite, it did help with the sleep issues though... I forget the dosage she was on...
Luckily we havent had to change the medication in over a year! But the year before that was pure hell... We tried concerta, adderall, and something else that is escaping me at the moment... Just had a heck of a time finding the right fit for sd... Concerta made her obsessive, adderall (not xr) was not enough, and the one I cant remember didnt do a thing!!
Unfortunately it is pretty much trial and error, until you find the right medicine for your child... Afterall each child is quite different...
Is it wearing off before the end of the day? My sd takes a booster of 10 mg regular adderall on nights she has homework, or a social event something of that nature where she needs to be more in control of her impulses or concentrate... Would something like that help?

cat and Linda, thanks for the nice welcoming! I can tell I'm gonna love this place already! I believe I'm gonna just have to have his dose raised, and if his doctor says no, I may just have to find another Doc. I did some searching on google, on metabolic rates and meds, I saw at different places that alot of times it does depend on a persons metabolism when it comes to a dosage. I just think it's reallly weird how every single med he has tried has lost it's effectiveness around the same time. It is really hard to tell about it wearing off at the end of the day. Some days when I pick him up he is argumentive, others he is ok. His teacher did say however, that she notices when it has worn off, she said this though when he was on 10 mg a few weeks after school started. I have also noticed at the end of the day, these past few weeks he has had a hard time getting his planner completed with his homework assignments written down. But, and this is also odd, he seems to be having a hard time falling asleep, and this is when he has only been giving one of these adderall xr in the A.M. Its a mystery I tell ya! BRB,the debate is on!

Oh yes sleep issues are a nightmare... Those are the only 2 side effects that I see in my sd, sleep issues, and appetite issues...
Sd was on clonodine for a while, which helped the sleep issues it was a very small dose of .05 mg... She was out like a light...
We have since stopped the clonodine, and sd actually stays up later at night then I would prefer... Call me insane, but I swear the less sleep she has the better she is at getting up in the morning... And well it isnt good to send your child to school crying over a meltdown every morning due to not waking up and cooperating... Luckily I stay up late anyway, and now our mornings are much more peacefull... I wouldnt necessarily say this would work on any child, after all it is the opposite we are told to do with our kids... I am to the point I will do whatever works for her and us, luckily she doesnt seem over tired on the amount of sleep she is getting... Although I am ;D LOL! Kidding..
