Hi, I would love to hear about your experience so far. How old is your ds or dd?? How long have you been using this medicine, do you notice a difference in about 45 minutes?? How about coming off the medicine, how long does it seem to last?? Sorry I can't help you with the eatting thing, since I am new to this to.

we are very happy with ritilan la. he was taking reg. ritilan 10 mg. 3 x a day and it worked sio well I was hesitant to change to the la, but my son didn't want to take a pill during camp, so we tried the la. We are really happy with it. It lasts about 7 hour maybe a little bit more. I usually give him reg ritilan in the late afternoon. It has been kicking in fairly quickly. The reg. ritilan took about 45 min to kick in this takes about 30 minutes. my son is 10 and has also been on aderral. we are much happier with ritilan. Any other questions please feel free to ask

Is your son more metally hyper or physically hyper? My ds is more mentally hyper(I wrote a whole book unnder my post to Amsmon) And I just don't see this medicine working the way it should, I think it is almost making him more hyped up today. I am just so confused by all this, I just wish it was black & white, not so many exceptions you know??

Ritalin LA works differently for each patient. It's designed to last about 8 hours, unless there are extinuating circumstances. My son is eight and has been taking it for over a year. It only lasts four hours with him. He has taken it on an empty stomach or with food; it doesn't seem to make any difference. With any med it takes awhile to become it's most effective, so with each, I have found it's been necessary to stick it out for a little while to see if side-effects subside. MOst importantly...don't give up!!

Our doctor recommends we take the Ritalin LA with food. If I wait a half hour - DS won't eat.
Ritalin LA doesn't work well for us. DS did great with ritalin - but we wanted to go to the time released since he is now older. We were on Metadate CD which wasn't as good as ritalin but it worked well, the mood swings weren't bad during the come down period. Our health insurance stopped coverage on Metadate CD so we went to Ritalin LA. But I don't think the time release is working well with DS. He gets almost comatose in the mornings and then he gets a little hyper just after lunch - it is kind of like it is release too much in the morning and not enough in the afternoon - and the come down period is far worse than even the straight ritalin. The doctor is trying to get approval for the Metadate CD through the insurance company. But that is just our experience with it.

We are still trying to decide if the la works as well. He is in camp all day so it is hard to say. He seems fine on it on the weekends. I guess the big test will be when school starts. He really likes not having the second dose at lunch and it would be great if we didn't have to change back. I guess I will just have to wait and see.

My dd tales Ritalin LA and out of all the ADHD meds out there (and believe me she has taken quite a few) this one has always worked best for her. It should take about 30 minutes to "kick in" and you can take it with food or without. It does kill the appetite some though, so I recommend eating good first. Every child is diiferent though and what works for some, doesn't for others. Also children metabolize differently so what might work eight hours for some, may only work six for others. It really is a personal trial and error. It is very frustrating to go through, but you'll eventually find what works for your child. Hang in there!
