We are still in the diagnosing stage with DD but the pediatrician has stated that if meds are indicated, she would like to start them this year while DD is still in a classroom with a teacher that knows her background. I am curious what meds your kids were started out on, how many meds were they started with, and how many of you found the initial treatment program to be beneficial? Thank you in advance for any feedback on this.

My son started with straight three times a day ritalin... but not until he was 13 (he is now almost 16 and on Concerta) ... so I am not the best person to answer this! ... Will be more interesting to see what others say who's kids started meds earlier ...
But I did want to wish you GOOD LUCK and say WELCOME ABOARD !! ... you are in the right place!

We started with meds feb. of 2003. It seems like along time ago and a million meds ago. Brenna was 6 when we started with meds. She is now 8. We have come along way!!!!!! * Imipramine * Tennex *Strateera *Zoloft and clonidine at bed time *Clonididne in am and pm *Remeron and Zyprexia *Ritalin tid *Ritalin La and Ritalin (plain after school) *Ritalin La (20mg) and Prozac 5mg in the am and clonidine at bedtime. *Ritalin La 20Mg in am and Ritalin 10mg after school and clonidine 0.1mg at bedtime. This is our current list of meds. Be patient it works by trial and error. They wanted to avoid stimulants with Brenna because of anxiety, but the Ritalin does not seem to make it any worse. Not every one has to go through this many meds. Good Luck!!!! Shelli

We started in October of 2002 when Steven was 9 with Concerta. We did a slight detour because of headaches with Adderal which we stopped quickly (because of emotional outbursts) and ritalin. Both were awful. We went back to Concerta and he got used to Concerta and the headaches went away. He's doing great, but having some sleep problems.

Thank you for the welcome. It seems that the treatment is very highly individualized. I have heard good and bad about so many of the meds. I am hoping that we can find something that works for DD before the end of the school year.

Started with Adderall XR, then tried Strattera, now we're on Concerta. It's really a guessing game. Everyone reacts so differently to the different meds that are out there. Good luck!

It seems that the treatment is very highly individualized. That quote is "it" in a nutshell. What works for one may not for another. It can be very trying but you just have to work at it until you find the right one. My dd is currently a 6th grader, she started meds in 1st grade. She was started on Adderall, it took only two days to see it wasn't for her. She had severe behavioral outbursts on this med. She was then switched to Ritalin three times a day. She now takes Ritalin LA. In between all these years she has tried Metadate, Concerta, and Strattera. Ritalin seems to be the one that works best for her. Good luck finding what works for your dd.

Concerta was first, the dr's said he would of preferred starting with ritalin, but since my sd has had seizure's in the past didnt want to use ritalin...
I think from reading this, and knowing my sd's history, it is definately pretty individual as to what will actually work!

My DS started on Ritalin - 3 times a day. It seems at first to work real well, then you could definitely see the peaks and valleys of this med. The valleys were tough, especially when the side effects kick in, like not having much of an appetite. We started on this med when he was in first grade. He is currently in second grade.
Now, my DS takes Concerta plus other vitamin supplements. I really like the Concerta for him. His appetitie is much much better than with the Ritalin. Concerta usually takes about 1/2 hour to kick in. I don't give it to him until after he eats a good breakfast which is about 7:30 am. So by 8:00am it seems to have kicked in for the day. It usually last about 12 hours for my DS, which to me is great.
Concerta really works well with the focus and paying attention. I noticed a big difference in my DS grades this year. I have actually gotten some great comments on how well my DS is doing both academically and behaviorally.
So far we have really like Concerta, but I heard it's not for everyone. It's nice because you only have to give one pill daily. That is very convenient for us.

DS was in second grade and we started on Adderall at the end of the year. It worked right away, and by the last report card his grades had all improved. In 4th grade we went to adderall XR because of the longer school day. He stayed on that untill 6th grade when he hit puberty and started getting depressed. We tried concerta and it was terrible with the emotional outbursts. We tried strattera alone and was great for his depression, but did not help in the classroom with focusing. We went back to adderall XR and he is now in 7th grade and doing just as well as he did when we first started it. He now takes 20mg of the adderall XR. We started him on 15mg untill he went to the XR and he has been on 20mg since then.

Conner was only 3 at the time... We started him out with Adderall (regular form), and he took 5 mg a day for a while, then moved up to 10 mgs...within the first month...

Brooke started on liquid ritalin, but all we saw was side effects and no real benefits.
She has been on all of the stims at one time or another and concerta was the best for her.
We wanted to try Strattera, because it is a non stime and we really like the way it has calmed her down. But it does not seem to work as well with focus, so we have added Concerta (half the original dose) and she is doing the best she ever has.
But your point about meds being highly individualized is correct, what works for some does not work for all. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to try different meds before you find the right one.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you all for the feedback. Our first psychologist appt. is tomorrow w/ the ped. appt. following next week. The ped. heas told me that the Connor's evals. were highly suggestive of classic ADD and as soon as she gets feedback from tomorrow's visit, we will get started. I will let you know what we are starting with at that point. As I have already told Cat, I am very anxious to see how DD responds and am feeling ambivalent about the potential S.E.'s.
