My Ds8 ,Already diagnosed Adhd, has now been diagnosed Mild Autism as well. His Doc has prescribed Risperdal for some anxiety issues. However I know very little about this drug and keep finding it under sections for Schizophrenic disorders. I am a little confused? Any help is appreciated, Have a peaceful day, Christina

Hi Christina ... I am not personally familiar with Risperdal but I do know that Risperdal is used for many other disorders apart from schizophrenia... Hopefully some of those familiar with risperdal will see this and respond ...
But in the meantime I know there has been some information here about risperdal. You might want to do a "search" on risperdal and see what you get ...
GOOD LUCK!

Hi Christina, my son is eight also. He's been on Risperdal for quite some time. The intent was to help him with aggression and it has worked wonderfully! His psychiatrist doesn't want him on it all the time, so he won't be taking it when school is out and summer is here. I imagine he'll have to go back on it in the fall when school starts. But he'll remain on his other medications: Ritalin LA, Focalin, and Clonidine. Most of these medications can treat more than one problem, so for now, trust your doctor.

loveforeric, My ds8 has been taking Risperdal for 4 yrs. It was not an easy decision for me to decide to give it to him, but I can see how much it has helped him for his aggression. The reason you find it under schizophrenic disorder usage is b/c that was the original population it was used for. It has been used "off-label" for children for several years (I am not sure how many yrs). It has made a huge difference in stabilzing my ds's physical aggression outbursts.

My son was just perscribed Risperdal two weeks ago. He will be 4 at the end of May and just diagnosed w/ ADHD. The doctor wants him to take one pill 1/2 hour prior to bed. He thought it would help him relax and be able to fall asleep more easily. So far I haven't noticed it working. He is still up late- later than I am. My son is very agressive- just got called today by day care to get him because he was hitting his teacher and calling her stupid. I hope this medication works well for your child. Hearing from other parents in similar situations helps.

Bransmomma, I started to give it to Ds9 and it din't help at all. In fact He, like yours, started to stay up later and later. Not what I expected. So I stopped giving it to him. He has since been much calmer and stays up later than the other kids but, I found many articles stating a childwith ADHD and/or Autism needs less sleep than others. I hope it gets better for you. We are stll dealing with his aggresion but he isn't staying up all night. Also I want you to know that this medication might work wonderful for you when the kinks are worked out. I know a mom whose son takes it and it does wonders for him. Good luck and let us know how you are doing, Christina

Hi Christina. We still aren't having any luck with Risperdal either. My son is still up until at least 10pm. I am calling the doctor today to see what his thoughts are. My son still has agression issues during the day as well. I'm still getting calls from Kinder Care saying he is hitting the teacher, kicking, calling people stupid etc. Did you doctor prescribe anything different for your child to take? My son started Concerta almost two weeks ago (taking it in the AM). I noticed a difference at first but not really anymore. This whole trial by error thing is driving me nuts. I know it takes time to find a med that works but I'm going to be in the loony bin by then.
Take care. Hope things work out.

Stacey; I know how the whole med try works. We are still on that roller coaster. with ds9 having Autism-As and ADHD we are not sure that the Adhd meds. don't make things worse. I wish I knew. Somedays he is great with little or no Meds and somedays he is a bear. And with more dose he has good and bad days too. I hope things are starting to work out for you. Let me know, Christina

My sisters boy, 12 yrs old is taking Depakote (for mood stabilizer), Clonidine (for sleep), and will start on Risperdal next week for agression. He is very explosive and will attack other kids for no reason. I sure hope this works!
I remember hearing about a med similar to Risperdal but don't remember the name of it. It was said to have fewer side effects and accomplish the same thing. Can anyone help me out with the name of this? I think it was something like Afibility?? Am I close?

You're thinking of Abilify.
