Dev is starting his first dose of 18mg of Strattera tomorrow morning along with his current 30 mg of Adderall XR. Is there anything I should watch for or warn the school about? I already plan on letting them know that a new med has been introduced, but I'm not sure what to tell them to look for. Any advice?

The first couple of days you may see headaches and stomach aches. I saw them on the first day only with Brooke. It may affect sleep. Some doctors advise that you give it to them at night, so they can sleep through the side effects (if there are any)
When Brooke started, she was still on Concerta (36mg) for the first 4 days, and I really was amazed how different she was (in a good way.) Well behaved, calm, attentive. Then she bumped to 25 mg of Strattera and dropped the stim. She did very well, at least as well as she had done on stims. It calmed her down tremendously.
Now she has been on it for 5 months and we just recnetly added 18mg of Concerta back along with her 40mg of Strattera and she is reeally doing well. We added the Concerta back because the Strattera (at least for Brooke) didn't really help her focus.
Good luck and keep us posted.

When you give it to him, try to give it to him with a high carb food item. This seems to help with the upset stomach SI. My daughter always gets a stomach ache if she takes her pill without food! (So do I)
My daughter was also pretty tired at first. You might want to let the school know that if your son is acting very sleepy, it is because of the Strat.
Other than the two above, there weren't any other noticeable problems! Good Luck!!

Thanks for the replies!! I can't wait...he's excited too, he has seen the commercials on TV and it makes him feel better that it "worked" in the commercial. I wanted to tell him that just because it worked in the commercial doesn't mean anything...BUT...if he goes into this with a good and positive attitude the better off he is. I believe in mind over matter!! Guess I'll be waking up early to make him pancakes....sigh....the things we do... . I'll definently let the school know that it may make him sleepy and may have an upset stomach. The doctor didn't say anything about giving to him at night, so we'll see how the morning goes. I'll also give my boss a heads up, just in case! I will keep you updated!!

When Katie started Strattera, she was really really tired and slept a lot at first. She also had major mood swings about three weeks into it. I found that scrambled eggs worked better than carbs before the meds, but taking it on an empty stomach makes her yak. She has also developed carsickness so if we're on a road trip I don't medicate till we're there. Other than that, she eats and sleeps well, and overall I'm pleased with the results. She's been on for nearly a year now.

I think that's so cute that he's excited because he saw that Strattera worked in the commercials.

We're on our 2nd full day of strattera. No major differences yet, but he's still on the Adderall also. Although, he has had 2 good days at school and seems in a better mood overall. He was really good this morning!! That says alot considering every morning is a nightmare! I'll wait a few more days to really give some sort of real opinion on this. Thanks for the support!

Well, Devin has been on 18mg of Strattera for a week now and so far so good. He has complained of headaches now and then, is that related? I can't tell, but his mood has improved sooooo much!! I actually got to take him to Chuck E Cheese on Sunday! It's been so long since I was able to give him such a reward! Don't get me wrong, he still has his moments, but he is also a 10 year old boy! Thursday, we up the dose to 25 mg. Maybe at that point I'll lower the Adderall to 25mg.

Headaches are a side effect of Strattera in the beginning. I would let the doctor know about them.
They may increase when you start the new dosage, but they should go away soon
They should lessen in time, but if they don't, let the doc know.
Good luck and keep us posted.
