Dear Finnmom,
The concerta web site offers suggestions on using the med and forms to evaluate usage.

We were told to give the meds two weeks to see the full effects. At first my ds had decreased appetite :'(but after 12 days he was eating better . Concerta is not based on weight. We havent had any problems with not sleeping or anything else. He was on 27mg and we are increasing his dose to 36 tomorrow. It has worked well for him. We have seen a change but what works for one might not work for another. Trial and error! ;D

My 7 yr old is on 72mg. He is about 60 pounds now. We also had a problem with him losing his concentration so we added Wellbutrin, an antidepressant. I really did not want to do this but am sooooo glad we did. He is back to focusing and concentrating. I hope this sticks for a while.

Day three on Concerta. No meltdowns except normal sibling things. DD asked to eat dinner. DD asked to do homework and finished quickly without arguement.
Teacher could not tell with concentration yet, but it is still so early. We both agreed that even with improved concentration, DD will still need time to "relearn" coping skills and a "I can do it" attitude since her self-esteem is still low.

on_edge, the self esteem thing does get better. DD felt better when the other kids reacted to her more positively, and then she got more involved in things and finally made some friends.

The fourth day came with noticeable results from teacher. I had to stop by the classroom and the teacher stopped the test she was giving the kids to show me DD's work right away instead of after school. Teacher was so amazed that DD's handwriting, which is usually all over the place, was neat and near perfect, and was having such an awesome day with behavior. Teacher made sure DD was thoroughly complimented in front of class.

Dear Finnmom,
DD had a HUGE meltdown first day, too, but only minor ones the next. Now, she has very few. Concerta peaks at 8 hours and then starts to decline the next four.

Hi - my 8 year old is on concerta now - 27 mgs. = but no appetite. He just started on Sunday. Does the appetite tend to kick back in? If so, when? He can't really stand to lose any more weight. Thanks!

The lack of appetite was why I decided to try Strattera for my daughter. She is already thin but was starting to look like a bag of bones because she was hardly eating. She's been on Strattera for about nine months and has gained 12 pounds and several inches in height. She's about 5' tall now.

I tried Strattera, but decided to stop it. It caused my son to be too lethargic and his heart was racing terribly when he did anything athletic. Stims work best for him. Just gotta get him eating!

It has been 4 days now, nothing too serious, meltdown at 4.30 pm couple of time´s, not getting any sleep yesterday; I hope that woun´t go any more wurther, I can´t stand it ;D Ds has not suffered of any lack of apetite yet. I told OT:ist about of that med, WAU, that lady is so agains´t med´s!! ;D Made me look like a drug-lover ;D Today, after OT-appointment she whispered me: he is so quiet, almost too quiet ;D ;D ;D I most deffenately have to discus our decision with her in future, even as I´am not willing to Well, For this long; all is well, may it keep going like this, PLEASE!!
