The only med breaks Brooke gets are the accidental ones when I forget to give her the medicine (over 8 months since last time.) Those are days I get the answer to my eternal question, "Is this medicine doing anything?"

I agree that it depends on the child. Kayley is sooo hyper wuthout her meds there is no way I could take them off on purpose. She simply can't control herself. I would love it but I don't see it happening

We usually don't give DS his meds on the weekend or school vacations; I like the idea of giving his system a break. Plus, he eats much better without the meds! He is on Concerta 27 mg., but the neurologist has also given us a presscription for Focalin, which is shorter-acting. If we have a need for meds on the weekend, he gets the Focalin.

never give the meds on weekends, holidays and 1/2 days. Help not to have to increase dosage too much and it is fresh in their system monday, eats great. It is up to the parent. I will stop meds all together soon. I am beginning to think ADHD is misdiagnosed. As my daughter was told she no longer has it by her therapyst and may have been misdiagnosed yet they pshych says no and she needs meds....well all the teachers reports were completely different...some teachers said she was a perfect student and some said she was impulsive and many did not. So the pshych wants her on meds and her therapyst does not...the parents need to take control and follow their instinct and what is best....I am against meds except for school if needed and extreme cases....a child can just be hyper and not ADHD. I have seen children that are true ADHD and I can understand needing to med every ady.

smilechild; Who is it that is telling you to give your daughter meds? If some teachers are saying that she is a perfect student, I wouldn't give her meds. As for the teachers who say she needs them, I would tell them to talk to their fellow educators.
Sometimes it depends on the teacher.....it's sad to say but true. Teachers who are patient and understand that not all kids are perfect ,seem to understand when kids get a little restless. Others....well, they just think meds will solve all problems.
I was told by a doctor once that if you give meds (stims) to a child that doesn't have ADD/ADHD, it will only make them hyper. The end result will not be the same as if you give an ADD/ADHD child the meds. I guess the same is true if someone is given insullin for diabetes if they haven't been diagnosed with it. It's not going to help them.

I give my son meds on weekends and holidays also but I give him less of a dosage.During the week he gets 17 1/2mg of ritalin morning and lunch and 10 in the evening and during the weekend I give him 12 1/2 in the am afternoon and still 10 in the evening just because I dont need him to be able to fully concentrate like he needs to at school. But he defenelty still requires some and he is much happier on it.

I too agree that to give breaks or not to give breaks depends entirely upon the child .... it also depends upon WHERE the benefits are for each particular child. My 15 year old son benefits a lot from his meds at school. He has gone from " Disruptive Class Clown" to "No behaviour problems" (or at least there haven't been any for a very long time now!) and that has been thanks to meds and possibly also getting older....
BUT at weekends I am not bothered about him being a "Class Clown" .... and so I give him half a dosage (18 mg of Concerta) ... but the last 2 weekends I have stopped it completely .... and can honestly say he is absolutely fine !! ... HUNGRY ;D... but fine in himself .... whether this is because hyperactivity has never been a big issue for him or whether its because maturity is helping I honestly don't know .... but my plan is that as long as he is "fine" at weekends I am going to continue without... BUT I wouldn't have considered this 2 years ago .... so I think it really " Depends" on so many factors including the individual child and the stage they are at in their lives ......
