i was wondering if the adderall xr my son is taking is causing him to have nitemares...last nite he let out an ear peircing scream at around 2am and ran in our room i freaked out since i was dead asleep...he told me his bed was shaking and he got scared...i think it might of been one of the dogs that he sleeps with moved and since he was half asleep he freaked out but i don't know..the other nite he told me about all these strange dreams he had...i'm not sure if this is a side effect of the meds or not...anyone else have this happen.?

How old is he? And has this every happened before? I don't know about the adderal we use ritalin. So I am not discounting the adderal at all!!
But DS has nightmares (non-medication related). Growing pains, nightmares and night terrors seem to be more prevelant in boys than in girls. DS has awakened screaming at the top of his lungs many times. The worst are the night terrors - when he isn't awake - he'll be screaming for mom - I can say it's me, it's Mommy! I'm right here. And he will still call for me hysterically. I know many people who's sons go through this (especially the night terrors).

Hi
My son had night terrors. They started when he was 4 months old and lasted until he was 4 1/2 yrs old. Thankfully, he has outgrown them like the doctor said he would. Now and again he has nightmares but he doesn't wake up screaming at the top of his lungs. He actually just wakes me up and asks that i turn on the t.v. for a little while.

eaccae~ he is 8 years old..he has had nitemares before but not that intense and they don't happen often...usually he will just come in crying...this is the second time he has screamed like that in the middle of the nite...the first time he wasn't on any medication and it occurred a few months ago....he has been on the adderall xr for a week now...i was just wondering if this medication intensifies these types of things.?

My guess is - and this is ONLY a guess - the adderall would probably have left his system by this time.
My son will be 8 in December - and he still has nightmares like this. He had night terrors that started around 3.5 maybe 4 (much later than 4 months for us). And they are still there but the nightmares are more prevelant - the night terrors are slowly diminishing. the nightmares are too - they don't occur all the time - spaced out - like you were saying - but they are still there for him. He'll wake up screaming - sometimes he doesn't even remember why - but loud enough to wake up 36,000 sq farm house full of people (vacation house with cousins - that's always fun at 2:00 in the morning with 8 children and 6 adults!).
I don't know what causes the nightmares. DS also goes through intense growing pains where he wakes up screaming hysterically and his legs are killing. DH remembers this from when he was little. I wonder if any of these things have to do with hormones or growth?
So - anyway - I have no idea if the adderall would intensify it but if it is out of his system by this time I would think not.

my dd has night terrors. She's been having them since she was about 1 I think. But here lately they are worse. She has one every night. It usually occurs about an hour after she falls asleep. She'll usually just have 1, but sommetimes she'll have 2 or 3 a night. She's 6 I hope she grows out of this soon.

Hi..My son is 4 yrs old and just started taking adderall xr on the 25th of march.. started out at 5 mg for 3 days and now up to 10mg in the morning. we did start noticing aggression and a very lippy mouth on him. talking back more than he used to. and he has been waking up with nightmares. he has had nightmares/night terrors before but not like every night. how long does it take for the body to get used to the meds before u actually see results/difference. i am taking him to a neurologist in the next couple of weeks to be tested for learning disablilities and further evaluation of adhd.. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

My DS is 11 years old, and having night terrors every night. He started on Adderall XR in October 2003 - in December 2003 he had the flu during which the night terrors started. He has to take clonazapem every night to sleep, he has no night terrors on this medication. I just wonder, did anybody else's child get sick while on Adderall XR and start having sleep issues? ?

DS13 has been on adderall and then adderall XR since he was 8. I have never noticed any side effects other than some decrease in apitite. He has always had real bad leg aches, but so did I for years. In fact I still have them. My mom was told by the doctor that they were growing pains and would stop when I stopped growing. Yea right, they havent stopped yet and I think I stopped growing years ago. For sleep problems I read in a medical magazine that a hand full of fresh cherries about 1 hour before bedtime will help. They contain natural meletonin.

My Conner is 4 years old and has been taking Adderall for over a year now. We have been blessed with not having the decrease in appetite!! But we do have nightmares... It's not every night, or even every month... but if he's been SUPER SUPER active and hasn't had a nap, that is usually when we have our worst nights. I don't think it's the medication that is causing the night terrors...I think it's just his little body. *sigh*...
But he will wake up SCREAMING at the top of his lungs.. blood curdling screams that have us all thinking something is in the room with him... On nights like this the ONLY thing that calms him down is sleeping with us...
We've also noticed with Conner that at bedtime he just can NOT stop moving... guess it's part of his ADHD. His little body will just jerk and twitch as he's falling asleep...and once asleep he's all over the bed....
